Old People

Old people like to go to the early bird special for dinner. They go to bingo and they always go to church. Old people go to the doctors every other day. Old people are slow and we all know this but why do they have driver’s licenses? I could rant or even some say rage about how they do 35 in a 55 when you are trying to do 75. I know they need to be mobile in order to maintain some resemblance of being able to take care of themselves or even not to be a huge burden on their children or loved ones but I feel that their driving privileges should be taken away after they become a burden on society at large. Anyone can say “ after 70 they should have their license revoked” but I don’t feel this to be accurate. At 16 every driver has to take a road test in order receive a license and maybe after a certain age you should have to take one every 2 years to be able to keep yours. It has been a few years now since I took mine but if I remember right you have to preform a few maneuvers, not touch the lines and do it in less than 5 minutes. Why not task old people to do the same? I watch a show called Top Gear and they asked a few questions once that made me think. How many times have you seen a young person drive into a crowd not knowing what they are doing? How many times have you seen a young person drive the wrong way on a street? I feel it might not only help us younger people rushing to get know here quick but it would help old people out also.

  1. I think life is about this, about three generations, after being a baby, younger than older, aging is a natural thing you have to do. People don't look forward to getting older because of the lost of senses. People start to think you are weaker. But with age comes wisdom, and the experience in life. It is more about people helping the elderly as they were helped as babies. We all will be old one day so we should treat the old as we want to be treated. So maybe they can't drive but we should offer them a ride.

  2. I agree 100% with your post topic and it makes me very very angry when I see an elderly person making dumb mistakes on the road (which by the way is at least once a day). By all means, if you are 60 yrs old and take the driving test and pass, then sure get behind the wheel. But its just a fact that as you get older, your body deteriorates and is just not able to do things that you can when your 30. Reflexes are slower, vision is worsened, and decision making skills can be altered in negative ways. My boyfriend was actually killed on a motorcycle by a 79 yr old handicapped man driving an SUV. This accident occurred in the middle of a beautiful sunny clear day on a straight portion of road. The driver's inability to safely operate a vehicle was the sole cause of the accident. Outside the court house I watched as this man struggled to exit his car and hobble to the door. It took him 10 min, TEN MINUTES, from the time he opened his door to get out of the car to when he walked through the court house doors. It just is not right and this issue needs to immediately be addressed before anyone else gets hurt.

  3. I agree with you on this post. Too many times have I been cut off by an old person or been stuck behind one, having to drive 10-20 miles under the speed limit. I don't believe that this is a battle between the old and the young, but instead a raise of concern for safety. Turning on a blinker does not automatically give the driver the right to pass or switch lanes without checking that the area around him/her is clear first. Also, driving 10-20 miles below the speed limit puts the driver and others around him/her at risk as it interrupts the flow of traffic. I think that the driving requirements should be given a second look, and that elderly people should be required to retest every year or two after a certain age to check for not only eye sight, but good motor reflexes as well.

  4. i guess everyone agrees with you on this topic. when i see old people behind the wheel of a car, i alwasy think to myself. can they see the road? or can they change lanes? sometimes i evern wonder what will happen if they had a stoke while driving.. they could easily kill anyone in their way.
i agree with the testing stuff, i think all old people should give a driving test every 6 months, so they could keep their driving privilages. because its really dangrous out there.

  5. Its clear that old people seem to cause a lot of frustration when it comes to driving. I, myself, cringe sometimes when I have to pass that little old lady who clearly cannot see over her steering wheel but through her steering wheel. There has been a recent study done that showed how after a certain age your response time is much more limited. With that being said, I think that elderly people should have more restrictions on their license (similar to new drivers) based on their proven ability to operate a motor vehicle.

  6. I didnt even read all of this blog. I agree and disagree. Now when Im driving, Im bookn it. I mean 80 in a 55 and its always some old head hopping in my lane and slowing me down. I curse that old head I tell you. However, they need to feel a sense of independance and who are we to deny them that?

  7. I do agree with this, i always seem to be stuck behind old people when i am driving. the worst is when i have to be somewhere verrrryyyy important and they speed up and then slow down , they pretty much play games with me and it makes me sooo mad.

  8. Seems to me that most people shouldn't be able to drive over a certain age. I've almost gotten in a few accidents from some elderly people who can't make up their mind on whether or not to speed up or slow down, cut me off, slam on their breaks, or just tailgating.

Michigan had the right idea to pass a law that disallows elderly people to drive in inclement weather after a certain age.

  9. I completely agree with you mike and they love to drive slow. I think they should either pass a law not allowing old people to drive or making them retake a test so they are driving right on the road. I have seen a lot of old people not knowing where they are going so they will break at every turn to see if that is their turn or hesitate to go or even cut people off completely because they do not see them there. You never know if they are falling asleep or could be having a heart attack. With how old they are you never know what they can do and what will happen while they are driving which can result in injuring others or killing others as well as them. Also, there are so many old people on the road with so much anger that they will run people off the road.
