Body Art

Individuals with tattoos and piercings maybe looked upon in many different ways. Society has made false acquisitions on the personality of an individual due to the type of body art that is portrayed on their bodies. The thing to remember is that a piercing is not going to change who you are. Society has made up stereotypes of a piercing based upon where it is located. Piercings can be done due to religious or cultural reasons as well. Nose piercing and ear piercings were mentioned in the bible. Nose piercings have been common to the Middle Eastern culture. For example, in the 16th century women would get their left nostril pierced because they believed that it had to do with female reproductive organs which is supposed to make childbirth easier. Ethiopian men and women have various facial piercings and some are identified by oversized ear discs. Lip plates in the women help to gain social status and command a higher bridal price. Henna tattoos symbolize that there has been a wedding or holiday in some cultures. Arab cultures are known for their belly dancing which is why belly piercings are known in their culture. It has been said that guys who had their right ear pierced meant that they are gay and the left means they are straight. Tongue piercing to some people makes the person look trashy and unprofessional. . But I think people should not judge a person by their body art because some people just like it and think that it’s cool. I believe anybody should be allowed to get a tattoo of whatever they want. But I think they should mean something important in a person’s life.

  1. i have to agree completly 100 percent on this one. I am person who six somewhat laegr tattoos and many pericings. I beleive that older people look down and say oh your going to regret that one day because you will not be able to get your dream job. I beleive that body art is a form of expressions. It allows people to look back on these things as memories, (i was doing this at that time when i peirced this). Many epeople look down on it beacuse it not the "norm" thing to do. People with body art are not different then people without it. They have feelings, intelligence, and mannors just like everyone else.

  2. Well i agree that tattoo is a form of expression an that older people will look down on you and say you are going to regret it later. But its your own body and you can do whatever you want to do with it. I think as long as you get something with meaning and not something stupid then its fine.

  3. You definitely can't judge a book by its cover, but the cover still reveals something about the content. The fact that someone chose to get a tattoo does say something about them and so a conclusion can be drawn from that. Also, tattoos are a form of expression and so by displaying one, aren't you asking people to at least make a judgement about you? You would probably say that someone with a tattoo of a cross was a Chrisitian. And you'd probably say that some with a swastika was an Idiot.

You do make a good a point that merely having a tattoo doesn't make a person bad in anyway and that shouldn't be faulted for it.

  4. I agree with you. We are a society that promotes personal freedom and expression. But we are also so quick to make judgements based on how a person expresses them selves. Personal expresssion is very important with a persons identitity. I think it is very wrong for people to look down on those who choose to express themselves in such ways. Just because that is no how some might choose to express themselves, does not mean that it is wrong for everyone. I was once watching a show called Miami Ink. It basically shows the life of a popular tattoo parlor. This on episode was of a woman who had three children, but one passed away recently. So this lady decided to get a tattoo of three butterflies that had all three of her childrens names on them. The third butterfly was for her third child who had passed away, and that butterfly was made to appear as though it was flying away from the others up towards the sky. This to me was an amazing way to express how she felt, and in now way should that type of personal expression be looked down upon.

  5. My stance on tattoos is seriously pretty loose as a whole - while I personally can't think of anything that I'd want on my body for that long of a time yet, I'm open to the idea that maybe some day I'll find something that I want to be reminded of for always. People get tattoos for all sorts of reasons, and the feeling like only punks get tattoos really gets under my skin, as it were.

I've got a lot of friends in professional jobs that have them, both of my parents have them... I think they're awesome, as long as you're okay with having it on your body, forget everyone else's opinion.

  6. body art is a form of self expression..so I love it..i have 4 piercings and 3 tattoos...and I plan on getting more lol. people shouldn't judge other people with tattoos and piercing because if they don't like then they dont have to get one a deal with it on their body for the rest of their life.

  7. I agree with you on this one. body art is a way of expression and they do have different meanings around the world. Some cultures don’t encourage it all and others do. I have two tattoos myself and when my mother saw she said I was turning into a slut. Knowing myself I definitely know that I am not. My tattoos mean something and it was a way for me to express myself just like people express themselves through the way that they dress or the type of music they listen to. People shouldn’t be judged and thought of as less than others because of their body art.

  8. I actually want to be a tattoo artist and I love looking at peoples tattoos. Im 17 so I cannot get any yet, but I know I will. Anyway, just like someone being overweight no one should be looked at differently based on skin art or piercings. My uncle owns his own chiropractic office and he always tells us stories about the people that he hires. Although I agree with him when he wants the best work staff possible, but I know that he doesn’t hire people based on tattoos. I think this is shallow and belive that he would get the same amount of clients even though his receptionist has a tattoo or a piercing in an odd place.

  10. I do believe that there are many stereotypes of people with tattoos and body piercings. Some suggest that people with multiple tattoos are “white trash” or “weird.” Tattoos are a form of expression. Most of those people with tattoos covering most of their body are people just trying to express their feelings through art. There is a saying, “Don’t wear your feelings on your sleeve,” but who says that’s the right thing to do. People love expressing their feelings and art is a wonderful way of doing so. I personally have a tattoo down the side of my torso. I chose to express my feelings toward family by writing my last name going vertical with the first two initials of each of my siblings horizontal in between each letter. I am not “white trash” or “weird,” I simply just love my family and I felt that permanently placing them on my body is a grand gesture to show my love and appreciation.
