It's More Than You Think

Have you ever had something that you were too afraid or ashamed of to say to other people around you? Were you afraid of what others might think and how they would react? A plethora of young teens have issues everyday with coming out and being proud of who they really like in regards to their sexuality. It's because they're afraid. They're totured by the thought of being an outcaste, hated on, and not loved. People will tease them for who they are. It becomes even more difficult when sexual orientation and family come into the mix. Some families won't be accepting of the thought of their child being "different". They either blame themselves and or blame the child. At times, the parents won't allow this type of lifestyle into thier home and in turn, disown their daughter or son. They either force them out or are in denial of the truth. It's a shame to think that a parent could hate their kid simply for who they love. Hatred is also found in the churches of today. Most kids that go to church are taught that it is bad to be gay and that the Bible calls it a "sin". Some go so far as to deem it deplorable, an abomination, and claim that God will not accept it. Kids are told they will go to Hell for being who they are.

I have a personal story of this exact situation happening to an old friend of mine. This girl was sent to be an outcaste and disowned from her church because the pastor had found out she experiences feelings for girls and not for boys. No longer was she a loud to go to the church she had been attending since she was little. The people at her church wouldn't speak to her and the boys started to harass her. My friend considered it to be the most horrible experiences in her entire life.

Why is there so much hatred towards certain sexual orientations? Why are so many people uncomfortable with picturing a couple of the same sex? This is something I will never understand. Who gives anymore the right to judge others for who they love? No one should have to hide their feelings. Society as a whole needs to turn a blind eye to other people's differences and realize that we are all equal and deserving of the same rights.
