We the people want to end Marijuana prohibition

Today, the White House launched its new, long-awaited website “We the People.” This websites provides people with a new way to petition the government to take actions on the significant issues facing United States. “If a petition gets sufficient support, White House staff will review it, ensure it is sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

The most popular topic is regarding marijuana. Legalizing and regulating Marijuana has received more huge numbers of signatures from people. Marijuana legalization looks to be the hottest topic on the site, and it is the first petition to go to public was for the legalization of marijuana. Moreover, Marijuana-related topics dominate the list.

Some people think Marijuana as in a manner similar to alcohol. Those people argue that Marijuana prohibition has resulted in the arrest of over 20 million Americans since 1965 and countless lives has been ruined. Yet Marijuana prohibition policy has still failed to lower use rates, limit the drug access, and create safer communities. They do not believe that prohibiting such drugs will not achieve those results in the future that it has never achieved in the past.

I disagree with those people. If they really think like that, why do we even need laws? There always will be crimes and chaos in the presence of those laws. That is such an excuse! I am against using Marijuana illegally because it has a high potential for abuse which means it is perceived as addictive and begins to dominate people’s life. I sometimes hear that some advocates of marijuana legalization says the drug cures diseases, makes some people happy, does not seem to be any more dangerous than alcohol. That sounds really foolish to me. What do you think about this issue? Do you think Marijuana should be legalized?

  1. Rather if Marijuana was legal or illegal i still can lead to addictive characteristics. It can be still considered in the same category as drinking. They are still considered addictive and dangerous in my opinion. People may say that Marijuana doesn't do anything to the body, but it still is putting smoke into your lungs. If it is legalized than people can still over use the drug. They can take the doctors prescription and use it for their advantage. You hear stories about it all the time.

  2. I always wanted to know why people use drugs. I know some people take them because they just want to try and they are mostly young people. But the problem with drugs is that you quickly used to them and then cannot stop using them. And you will spend all your money for drugs. People who have drugs lose their homes, families. If drugs legalise, more people will try them because it will be so easy and they will not be afraid of police. So more people can lose their homes and families. I don’t see anything good in this.

  3. Marijuana is a drug. Alcohol is also a drug. However, alcohol has no positive effects. Marijuana on the other hand is a drug that can and does help people. It is used for many medical purposes. For example, it helps with headaches, and nausea. Yet for some reason it is illegal. Advil and pepto bismol are both other the counter medications that have the exact same effects. With the legalization of marijuana would allow the government to tax the drug and with all the weed heads out there, the amount of revenue that it would bring into the country would be outstanding.

  4. I think legalizing marijuana is in the same category as lowering the legal drinking age to 18. If prohibition has not had any effects on reducing use, why not attempt to try a different approach. If you take places who have legalized the use of marijuana such as Amsterdam, in The Netherlands, or places where the legal age for drinking is 18. They have significantly lower rates of drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and crimes associated with each. The consumption rates may increase during the initial period, but once the novelty has worn off, I do believe our society would see positive effects.
