Drinking Age

I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to 16 years old. I think this because if you are able to buy cigarettes and porn magazines you should be able to drink. Not only because of this reason but because I feel like teens want to in a way "rebel" against the law and drink underage. If we allowed them to drink earlier then they would have no urge to drink. Take drugs for instance... people like that feeling of "rebelling" against the law and doing drugs. If we allowed them to start young then they wont care to drink as much as they would when they have to wait until 21.

Also, they will learn to handle their drinking and not even be able to drive drunk the years when they are beginning to drive. This will allow them to learn their alcohol tolerance by the time they do drive. I think this can be a solution to young teens dieing in car crashes from driving drunk. The main time for teens to drink is around 18 which will give plenty of time for the teens to learn when they are fine to drive and not or give them good judgment on if their driver is drunk or not. Teens die too much in these horrible accidents every year. Like my friend Steven Dankos from river hill. He was not able to get good judgment on whether or not he should of got into the back of that pick up truck or not because he was not given that time to learn. We must put a stop to it and I believe this is the best way.

  1. I personally do not agree with lowering the drinking age to 16. I think at that age your brain is still going through crucial developments and you are not able to handle the responsibility of being able to drink. I dont see a problem with the 16 yr old drinking without punishment if they are under the supervision of their parent or legal guardian. Texas has a similar law to this that allows underage persons to drink as long as their parent/guardian or spouse is of age.
Personally, I feel like the legal drinking age should be 18. If you are old enough to purchase tobacco and serve in the military, you should be able to legally drink.

  2. I think 16 years old is too young to set the drinking age. I agree with Erin, the brain is still developing, and teenagers are not able to make proper choices. Most teenagers think they are immortal. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, but I don't believe lower the drinking age would have saved his life. Most teenagers do it regardless of wether or not it's legal.

  3. I think it should be lowered, but only to 18. 16 is a bit too young and although many 16 yr olds do drink, its not really the best thing for them. Lowering the age to 18 would have a great effect on the rebel attitude you mentioned and help to keep people, especially college students, from binge drinking. When I turned 21, I could see a difference in my personal drinking habits as many do. Now that it was legal, you become less excited at the idea of alcohol. Sure I may drink a little more then before, but it is spread out over more time. A drink or two with dinner or a beer or two with friends rather than downing 10 shots in an hour at the one party where we were able to get our hands on alcohol.

  4. I think that if the drinking age were to be lowered, the driving age should be raised. I don't understand why the United States insists on doing things the complete opposite from other countries. I don't believe that the drinking age should be lowered quite down to 16 as others said, the brain is still developing. I don't understand why kids (16+) are able to drive, but adults (18+) aren't able to drink. Drinking can potentially put one's own life at risk, but driving can put multiple people's lives at risk. I think that if the drinking age were to be lowered to 18 and the driving age be raised to 21, there would be less reported accidents involving drunk teens.

  5. personally i would be LIVID if the drinking age were moved to 16 just because i just turned 21 and had to wait 21 years to drink. would be absolutely pissed off. Now on the other hand if the drinking age did change i believe 18 would be the right age. Due to being able to serve your country and most of the time your graduated. Serving your country/ and signing up for the military is the most patriotic thing you can do and why not have a beer along side your war buddies.

  6. I think that the drinking age she be dropped down to 18 years old. Why? Because if people can sign up and fight and die for our country shouldn't they be able to buy a freaking Corona? I mean honestly it doesn't make sense. its not like high school students don't drink, they just find someone that is 21 and go buy it for them. The fact is that people think that people in high school that turn 18 will drink and will buy it for their buddies. The fact is that THEY ALREADY DO!!! so stop this madness and lower the drinking age to 18. If your able to be trialed as an adult with full prosecution you should be able to go to the bar and drink your ass off.

  7. i think we should lower the drinking age also. i know the that amount of binge drinking sky rockets after children leave there home. When people can do it more often , there is less pressure to drink as much as you can. in Europe it is known that parents allow their kids to drink small amounts and in good taste. we keep it way and don't ever expose our kids to it that's why they never learn how to drink responsibly.

  8. While I do think that the drinking age should be lowered to 18, it can't be an overnight process. I remember being 18 and thinking that the promised land of being able to get alcohol on my own was only three short years away. That being said, I think that if we were to lower the drinking age straight away, we may see an increase in alcohol related incidents in our young people. The fact is that the majority of us drink while underage, and some of us have to pay lifelong consequences if the authorities catch us. May as well lower the age, we never payed attention to the rules anyway!
